Home care is not all about chores and housekeeping; or about an elderly person, or adult with disabilities needing to be taken care of. Home care is more like having someone in the home to provide extra support when needed; to keep the individual happy, safe, and thrive in his/her own home. It’s like having a buddy, daughter, son, or a family member helping to get things done the way you want it. Home care activities are carried out by trained professionals, sent to your home by the licensed agency contracted by or for you to provide the specific care and/or services you have indicated to your care management team that you need. Home care services vary from environmental services, such as cleaning, cooking, scheduling appointments and companionship to personal care services, including assistance with shower and grooming, dressing, and transfers to and from wheel-chair, and/or other services prescribed by the health care provider.
Home care in most cases is to enhance and support independence (except in palliative care); of the individuals, not to have them lose it. Caregivers are in the homes to give care-recipients the support they need to keep living their best life at home. Their presence in the home seems a welcome relief for the individual and family member(s) as it tends to take some weight off the shoulders; especially knowing that the loved one is in good hands.
